Enjoy this serene oil painting with wave-like brushstrokes from the Greater Light Collection. On the back in the upper right corner is, “Bathing Beach / Nantucket 1929” with signature, “Katherine D. Pagon”.
Greater Light was the summer home of Gertrude and Hanna Monaghan, two independent, educated, unmarried Quaker sisters from Philadelphia. Gertrude (1887–1962), a professional artist, and Hanna (1889–1972), an actress and author.
Their personal aesthetic blended art and whimsy with an appreciation of the handcrafted—whether woven, carved, forged, or painted—creating a strongly expressive environment suited to their tastes.
They chose to devote their lives to art, as an expression of their faith. They were Quakers, but of a decidedly different mold from the earlier Quaker population of Nantucket. Rather than rejecting art, they embraced it.
Hanna Monaghan, the surviving sister, bequeathed Greater Light and its contents to the NHA in 1972. It now operates each summer as a Historic Site for visitors to enjoy and for creative programming celebrating arts and more to be held.

We are thrilled to be launching a new Historic Bike Tour 🚲 this season to expand on narratives of Nantucket history and broaden the scope of history being told by NHA guides!
This new tour will consist of a two-hour ride, taking participants to iconic NHA historic sites, as well as exploring new locations of historic significance throughout the downtown and expanding outside of the downtown area.
The tour will take visitors back in time, extending centuries, starting in the Ice Age and concluding in the present day.
The NHA will host the first Historic Bike Tour on Friday, May 16 for the program series, Unwind Under the Whale. This will be the inaugural Historic Bike Tour ride, with additional dates being offered each month for visitors throughout the season.
The NHA is excited to partner with Young’s Bicycle Shop to offer participants a discounted rental of a traditional or e-bike, if they do not have a bicycle of their own.
Learn more at NHA.org and join us for our first ride on May 16! https://nha.org/whats-on/public-programs/unwind-under-the-whale-historic-bike-tour/

With our upcoming exhibition, Behind the Seams: Clothing and Textiles on Nantucket, opening in just about a month, we thought it was a great time to reshare costume and textile specialist, and guest curator of Behind the Seams, Jennifer Nieling discussing a special wedding dress from our collection—one worn by five different brides from three generations of the same family.
This segment was created for “Out of the Box: Unpacking Nantucket Stories,” an exhibition at the Nantucket Whaling Museum, 2017.
