Calistoga, California: Down-to-Earth Hamlet in Northern Napa Valley

The story goes like this: 19th-century developer Samuel Brannan wanted to create a West Coast version of Saratoga Springs (renowned at the time for its mineral spas), but he had been drinking when he made the announcement and so the name came out garbled as the "Calistoga of Sarifornia." This origin myth sounds a little fishy, but nevertheless, Brannan's vision of creating a relaxing-and-therapeutic Napa Valley getaway was eventually realized. Thanks to the area's natural hot springs, a slew of spas sprang up, offering restorative mineral soaks and mud baths. You can still find many such businesses peppered among the restaurants, boutiques, and art galleries lining Calistoga's quiet main street, which is set against a backdrop of rolling hills.

Those hills are home to some of Napa Valley's more than 400 wineries, many of which lie within a short drive of downtown Calistoga. The curious wine lover can choose from an array of vineyard experiences, ranging from tours to tastings at wineries modeled on English castles and Tuscan villas. One word of warning: many of these places require reservations, so be sure to book in advance.

Amazing cozy place We spent a night with my wife to celebrate our anniversary and go the next day to Castello di Amorosa. The place is really nice and cozy, we stayed at the Yountville room and it was perfect for what we were there. Selft Check in and out works perfect. They check on you by text all the time and answer any questions right away. They give you a voucher for breakfast each day of your stay, breakfast place is really good. It is 5 minutes driving to Castello di Amorosa, 1 block to main street. The have parking right in front and there is a gas station across the street. So location is perfect. We really recommend this place if you want to spend somedays in Napa Valley.

Last Minute Stay in Calistoga We booked a one-night stay in the Oakville Room at the Calistoga Wine Way Inn last minute due to a change in our plans, and it was a delightful experience. Nick was gracious in accommodating us with a King Room featuring a small patio accessible through a slider door entrance. The bed was incredibly comfortable, with pillows that were just the right balance of softness and firmness. Though the room was on the smaller side, it was spotless and perfect for our needs as a couple. The bathroom and shower were immaculate and well-appointed. We enjoyed watching a movie on our phone while relaxing on the patio before bedtime. The absence of a TV in the room did not bother us at all. The check-in and check-out processes were seamless. Breakfast at the Calistoga Roastery, included with our stay, was tasty and satisfying. We also appreciated the convenience of walking to Bricco Osteria & Bar for dinner, where we had an excellent meal with great service. Overall, our stay was perfect for a couple, and we would definitely return.
