Daytona Beach, Florida: Racing Legacy and a Famed Lighthouse

Hundreds of thousands of racing fans visit Daytona International Speedway each year to watch world-class champions such as Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon. Stock-car, sports-car, and motorcycle events round out the calendar all year, highlighted by the Daytona 500 in February—the first race of the Sprint Cup Series and typically regarded as the most prestigious. On various behind-the-scenes tours, you can explore the speedway's elevated press boxes, banked infield turns, and decadent hot tubs filled with motor oil.

At Daytona Beach itself, cars toting beach gear roll across the hard-packed sand through oceanfront driving zones; there are also traffic-free areas. South of town, you can see the Ponce de León Inlet Lighthouse. There, a spiral staircase winds up to the top of a 175-foot tower, where you can overlook a 52-acre park filled with armadillos, shore birds, and native wildflowers.

Has the potential to be the best but falls short This place has the potential to be a five star resort. I do love utilizing family owned resorts instead of chain resorts when I can. First off I would like to say that the view that we had from our room off the balcony could not have been better! The balcony was clean and had two chairs and a table and was amazing. The room had two queen beds and a table and chairs and a chair to sit in but the chairs for the table were very odd having a huge seat and sitting on the chairs was uncomfortable as they were pretty big. One complaint I have about the room was that there was a strange smell in the bathroom all week. Even after being cleaned it always had this strange odor. We even met some girls on the elevator. say ….oh yeah you’re on floor five that floor has a funny smell. I don’t know what that was but it was there every day. It did seem to be very clean, and the maids were usually very good about coming to check on the room. My biggest complaint would be that breakfast almost always ran out of food and there was almost never a chance to get any pancakes because they couldn’t make them fast enough. And they were also almost always out of other things. I realize this was a very busy week and they had a group there and that presented a problem because their bus took up a great big part of the parking lot. Fortunately, they do have an underground Parking area too. But still parking was a little tight. The group was a college group of touring singers and band members and they gave a great performance one time but unfortunately it was right in the middle of the hallway and you couldn’t get from the beach entrance to the elevator as we had just come in dripping wet and couldn’t get towels. But they were extremely talented and we were just at fault here because we hadn’t seen the sign that they would be performing. They were very good performers. One of my biggest complaints was that this one lady every day would come out and put towels and things on every lounge chair that faced the pool that was in the sun and several that were on the deck that faced the ocean and a table. She would do this about 7:20 in the morning. She would do this almost every single day except our last day. She also had a ton of kids with her often unsupervised and they would take over the swimming pool and unfortunately they also took over the hot tub every day. So we had very few options to ever actually enjoy the pool or the hot tub. Now one of the biggest advantages and the greatest things about this hotel is that the beach access is amazing and they have a new ramp and staircase to get to the beach and it is a great beach. So that is one huge advantage to this hotel. Another thing was the happy hour. Again, they do not plan for apparently the amount of crowds they have because one day we went at six and it starts at 5:30 and runs from 5:30 to 6:30 and at six almost everything was out. There were few options left to have anything to drink because everything was gone. Don’t think it would’ve been too hard to plan to have more drinks when you know you have an entirely huge crowd at the hotel. But it was nice to have the cocktail free every evening, but it would’ve also been nice to maybe have pretzels or something to go with it. I knew the breakfast was just gonna be a very simple continental breakfast, and that was fine. It’s just that they ran out of stuff and most of the stuff was like bagged bagels, etc. But that’s fine. I appreciate a free breakfast: Our smoke detector would go off every time we used the toaster. They even replaced the alarm and it still did it. And also on the last day at 9 o’clock in the morning, when I was still in my pajamas, the maid came knocking on the door. I had the do not disturb sign on the door. Check out is at 11. She was I assume trying to figure out if we had left so she could clean our room. But I was in my pajamas and I wasn’t too happy to have someone trying to get into our room to clean it before 11. So again, this hotel has the possibility of being one of the best ones on the beach if they can make a few of these changes, like trying to somehow monitor people hogging the chairs in the swimming area and having enough food and drinks available for the free breakfast and cocktail hour. The view though is what makes it a great choice and I have no doubt we would not hesitate to return. But it has the potential to be so much more.

Not Again We stayed at the Bahama House two weeks ago while visiting my son at college. I am sharing my personal experience and my first hand account of other issues I witnessed in the short time I was actually present at the hotel. When I entered the lobby to check in, I was waiting behind other guests being helped by the two staff members behind the desk . When both guests were finished, I stood there waiting. Finally, one of the employees told me to go to the other person as she was leaving. Comments were exchanged between them. I instantly sensed major tension between them and was uncomfortable. While standing there the employee helping me answered the phone. It was a customer trying to figure out why his reservation had been canceled. He asked the other employee, who did not yet leave, for help with what to say. She told him to tell the customer on the phone that she already spoke to him today about this. I guess the customer on the phone was hoping to get some help from someone else? (Not in this place!) While I was filling out my paper for parking my car, a guest in the hotel came over to the counter. He was obviously VERY agitated. I do not know why as it was clear the incident had already happened. He was asking the employee what their name was. He then proceeded to tell the employee that they shouldn't be wearing ear buds when communicating with customers. I have been in the lobby for just about 10 minutes and have employees who can't get along and have no problem expressing this in front of guests, an irate customer on the phone with no idea why his reservation was canceled, and a very angry customer in the lobby. I was not feeling good about this place. My family and I proceeded up to our room. I walked in and instantly turned around. It was not the room I booked. IF YOU CHOOSE TO STAY IN THIS HOTEL, MAKE THE RESERVATION ON THE PHONE WITH THEM! DO NOT book online. I did book through their website directly. It doesn't matter. My complaint at the desk was futile as I discovered they never sent a confirmation email! I searched my inbox, spam, etc., and nothing. The staff member who told me earlier she was leaving but was still at the front desk, said and I quote, "They do not send confirmation emails unless you call and request one. We really have few people that do so." Lesson learned, look for your confirmation. I just assumed it would be there if needed. I get confirmations for every little thing I do electronically. All the staff member could offer was the manager's card so I could reach out in the morning. I was offered the choice to leave with a refund but not an option for a family at 8pm. If I didn't have my kids with me, I would have gotten out of there. The next morning I was at the desk to speak with the manager. She insisted that I booked that room. She pulled something up on the computer claiming to prove the reservation was correct. She also claimed that an email is always sent to confirm but she could not confirm I was indeed sent one. I had no proof to argue my case. It was clear from the conversation that it is best to call directly. In her paperwork it showed me at one point assigned a room on the 3rd floor, moved to the 6th when I asked about a high floor through email, but was then moved back to the 3rd. I was so upset about getting the wrong room, I didn't even ask why my request was given and then taken away. Just my assumption, but I bet someone called in with a request and I was booted out. I bet that is where my room went. The following event I witnessed on my last day at the hotel. I was in my room when I heard screaming in the hallway. The cleaning staff entered an occupied room next to us, despite the do not enter sign on the door. The family was checking out that day and had left food in the kitchen to make their children lunch before leaving. This all occurred before check out time. The father was asking for his things to be returned, listing them off. Some things they took off the cleaning cart that were in a trash bag. He went through the bag and asked where additional items were. A staff member then came back with a box of items they had put elsewhere. He then said his beer was still missing, That was never returned. The complimentary breakfast is the worst I have ever had. I was expecting more for the way they promote this as a boutique hotel. It was yogurt, prepackaged bagels, prepackaged danishes and muffins, and pancakes in a crockpot. The location is good and the rooms are on the larger side.
