Great tribute to STEM

I was pleasantly amazed at the amount of science packed into this build, and the hidden science in the book pages. However, the build is not very sturdy, with bits breaking off during building and moving.

The foundations of innovation should be strong, so we suggest double-checking each step and rebuilding if anything isn't holding together. If there's still trouble, our experts at LEGO.build/Service-BV are happy to take a closer look.

Wonderful STEM set

Such an original design and a set that is packed full of details. I read the comments about the DNA being wrong so had to check for myself and found that Z-DNA is left handed so the design is correct. It was a very interesting build although the bee was a little fiddly. I also really like the book design and will probably use that as a base to make another creation of a fairy tale or such like.

A great bookshelf model celebrating STEM. I love the little details like the Newton's apple tree and Marie Curie laboratory and the space shuttle and bumble bee. The DNA strands rotate as well when the book handle is turned. A fun set to build

Fixing the double helix

5 out of 5 stars
Dr. Helix - 11 days ago

I'm a professor of molecular biology and genomics at an R1 US university, and the 1 star reviews are correct: the double helix of DNA is twisting the wrong way. I told Lego about this a couple of weeks ago and offered them a solution: To fix the helix to be right-handed is as simple as reversing (or actually mirroring) the instruction steps 58 through 67. Doing this will produce a correct, right-handed double helix. So anyone who wants the DNA to be right-handed should be able to easily do this. I know I will be doing it with my set.

It's good, but...

I bought this set because I am super into science, and that is what I have my degrees in, and while the set is super fun and is a great celebration of science... I was kind of disappointed. The build was short and kind of just felt "eh" for how much it cost. I still like it, still had fun, but I just think it was kind of smaller and shorter than I thought it would be because of the price.

Enjoying the build so far, but….

Enjoying the build so far. HOWEVER, to build the light spectrum and the Morse Code, just to cover it up makes no sense to me. All parts of the build should be visible.

This set is so unique and well thought out. It includes references to various important moments in scientific history, along with features that can spur conversations about science, math, physics and technology. There are a few very clever hidden Easter eggs here too!

Scientifically inaccurate

For starters, we are long-time Lego supporters in our household. My wife told me of this set, knowing that I did my PhD in DNA structural biology. I was appalled to see that the DNA is left handed! DNA exists naturally in a right handed helix. This cannot be corrected by flipping it or rotating it. The correct “handedness” can only come from a mirror image of the DNA structure as it is in this set. If this set is intended to support STEM and the history of STEM, then I recommend reworking this set to make the set scientifically accurate. Keeping it as is will ultimately disappoint those beautiful minds hoping to get into STEM.

The Evolution Of STEM is a great Lego IDEAS set!

When I learned about this Lego Ideas set, I knew I had to get it. This is one of the most well thought-out Lego sets I have ever worked on, and it was just as educational as the set itself. The Evolution Of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) is structured like a book that opens up and features several artifacts marking important milestones in science. It crams every little detail into an ingenious display. I will say, the last part in putting the insect together is the most challenging. But I highly recommend this set to adults and to children interested in learning about science and pursuing their education in STEM! We need more scientists and engineers, and this set has a simple message: Open the book and start learning how you can make things happen. Because you can!

Exceeded expectations

This set is very well designed and full of details. The various elements, including the little cityscape, flowers, and even the book-shaped base are attractive. I am a little surprised that the instruction booklet did not describe the reason for including some of the elements e.g., Newton's discovery that white light is a combination of all colors, which he discovered by shining light through a prism, but perhaps the idea was to inspire people to research these things on their own. I like the kinetics employed in the design as well. My only complaint is that the DNA helix is twisted in the wrong direction, but that is easily corrected.

A wonderful set and perfect for Women’s History Month! The finished build is dense packed full of history with a huge variety of disciplines represented! I love the functionality of the double helix and carbon atom. You can build a right-handed helix rather than the left-handed spiral in the instructions by putting the technic pieces in backwards. I wish Lego also included a Rosalind Franklin minifigure. One of my favourite details has to be the glow in the dark Radium tile! Looking forward to more STEM sets released in the future!!!

The DNA strand depicted on the box and instructions is left-handed. Pretty much all DNA is actually right-handed.

STEM is a very enjoyable build, educational, some surprises (I won't ruin by disclosing) & a great display piece. Really happy I got this. First one I wanted to build, from several purchased, on 3/1 release. It has moving elements, too!
