In a tale of magic and war comes the story of Brimstone. In End of the Last Great Kingdom by Victor Rose, you get to follow Brimstone on his epic adventure of going from a life on the outside of society to being a man worth fighting for.

End of the Last Great Kingdom is a fictional work that follows the tale of a young mage that has no powers. It takes you from Leaf being the laughingstock of the school to Brimstone being an epic leader. From imprisonment to rescuing a society, the story of Brimstone will take you all over the lands of this magical kingdom! By the end, you will also be ready to fight for the cause.

Let me first say that I was able to read this book in one sitting. From the opening line to the very last word on the last page of the book, I never once put it down. This is an epic, page-turning adventure that held me completely enraptured throughout the entire story. End of the Last Great Kingdom by Victor Rose is a story that provides the reader the adventure, mystery, fantasy, and excitement they are looking for. From a school of mages, to a war being fought for all the wrong reasons, to the story of the hero and his friends, this book is not to be over-looked. The author built the characters in such a way that I was fully invested in what happened to them. If we were following one character or group, I was still wondering what was happening to the other and could not wait to get back to their story. No matter the character and no matter the situation, I was completely enthralled. I cannot wait for the rest of the series to come out, so I can start reading the rest of this tale.

I am here trying to think of anything about this book that I feel could be improved, and I come up blank. I found very few grammatical errors to report in the reading of this book. The pace was great, and the plot was wonderful!

For all the positives and lack of negatives with this book, I would rate End of the Last Great Kingdom by Victor Rose 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to young adults and adults who enjoy fiction, fantasy, and adventure reading.

I really enjoyed this book, I loved how it combined the magic and fantasy of seen in books like Harry Potter with the blood, gore and battles seen in books like Game of Thrones. The overall premise of the book is a race war and young mage "Brimstone" that is the key to ending it. The characters in this book are highly developed, you get their fully backstory and learn what makes them act they way they do. The book is over 300 pages and it just book one in the saga, so even the smallest of characters you are given a little bit of a backstory on them so there is no filler characters each has a specific reason for being in the story. The setting is highly detailed as well and this is very important since the characters are pretty much always traveling.

If you are a fan of harry potter, but wanted something way more mature then you will like this novel, but I will say that some may not like this novel since it is VERY similar to harry potter, the first basic similarity is the group, Brimstone, Heat and Neutron.... which as you can see is three just like Harry, Ron and Hermione. Second, both go to magical school, in this book its Central, in Potter is Hogwarts. Third, Brimstone has to search for his fractured soul in order to become strong enough to defeat the order, and in Potter of course he has to locate the different horcrux to defeat the dark lord. But I will say the similarities do end pretty much there and that is because this story is a lot more mature than HP ever was since there is so much death in this book, and the deaths are very detailed and very gory. You have people stabbed in throats, peoples limbs being cut off, and oh you can forget the rotten corpses.

So even though this book is focused around young teens, like 13 years old, this book is probably not the best for kids of that age. But as an adult if you wanted a more mature harry potter then this is definitely the book for you.

The only real problem I had with the book, is that sometime the different characters and locations can get muddled and confusing of who is who since in the novel peoples name change as they take on new roles so it can be confusing to remember whose storyline you are reading about and the characters travel a lot and they often go to new places and then to places they have already been so the picture of the land gets confusing, so it would be awesome if the author had included a map at the beginning so you could tell the distances between places described in the characters travels. Time is another one that gets a bit confusing, since it is said to take weeks to get somewhere but then two pages later they are there, but the author will then use 10 pages to describe on day event, so dates would have been nice to.

So overall I would give this novel a solid 4 out of 5 stars, And I an definitely looking forward to reading the other novels in this series to see what becomes of Brimstone and all the other characters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yes ~ Sometimes Orcs are kind and friendly

    Title: "The BrimstoneChronicles"
My Rating: 4.3 out of 5

Whilst searching for a new book to read, I came across "The Brimstone Chronicles ~ End of the Last Great Kingdom" by Victor Rose. The introductory pages before the first chapter were enough to persuade me that this was going to be the next read for me. In these pages, the author explains the ancient history of orcs, elves and humans. I like the touch where the elves are associated with plants and the orcs with animals. We then learn that trolls were derived from elves and orcs, dwarfs from orcs and humans, goblins from gnomes and trolls. With such a beginning we are likely going to meet all of these creatures in the story. I was not disappointed.

The principal character, a young boy, starts with the name "Richard", but this changes to "Leaf", "Leo", and eventually "Brimstone" as we read on. Magic magi play an important part in the setting, especially the battle magi. Surprisingly, even though young Brimstone defeats a mage controlling fire, he secretly claims to have no magic at all. He is accepted into Mage School, (similarities to "Harry Potter" and "Hogwarts"), where he is tutored by "Nova", the mage he defeated. Brimstone befriends two other apprentices, "Heat" and "Neutron" to form team Crimson for magic battle trials. The magic school is well thought out with the grading of the apprentices and the trials they must undergo. Brimstone's training is harsh. He acquires a bracelet that gives him extraordinary capabilities, which is quite fortunate as he needs a magic boot to replace a leg lost in battle. I like the concept of anti-magic manacles that can, by magic, restrain any type of mage rendering them helpless. This sometimes gives Brimstone the edge, as he is supposedly not a mage.

The "Order" is the far-reaching, corrupt, evil enemy organisation that undertake despicable acts that the School attempts to withstand. However, circumstances force team Crimson to flee to other parts of the land and adopt stealth tactics to survive. Brimstone is isolated and thought lost. He is blamed and held accountable for many of the calamities that befall the various towns and communities in his path. Meanwhile, Brimstone is cursed and encounters demons such as "Demeter" and "Poisedon", leading to surprising results.

Overall, I found the writing style easy to read. The story is well constructed and easy to follow. There are some excellent descriptions, such as the two moons in chapter 1 that transport the reader to another world. Also, the phrase "the proper fists were heavy with coin" describes bribery.

Many details embellish this work, eg the use of the school armbands to designate rank was a good concept, and the struggles the main character has to acquire new parts of his soul. I particularly like the way that sometimes ugly creatures that are easily associated with an evil force, turn out to be kind and honest. eg "Jarrabe" the orc and his family. The story has a certain amount of continuity as characters reappear. The giant squid incident is referenced in later parts of the story, both in the chapter "Rematch" and also later when Neutron confesses what he has done.

I have two areas of concern. First I have the impression that the author may not have read this story out loud to himself. I think he would have spotted a few chances to improve. eg missing word "you" (Chapter 6 Para 15) and repeated word "alive" (Chapter 1 para 10). Second, although the magic system is well thought out, towards the end of the story I felt that Brimstone had become too powerful and it was almost pointless to put any further obstacles in his way.

On reflection, the last two points reduced the score a little and I award 4.3 stars out of 5 for this imaginative piece of work.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing - starts slow, and with too much exposition
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 12, 2019
Sulphurium is a land where the original pure races of human, elf and orc eventually interbred to produce hybrids such as trolls, goblins, gnomes and ogres. Then a new race came into being, descended from humans and elves – the enlighten, a sub-race that turned out to be able to master the elements. But Sulphurium is a violent world whose peoples struggle to survive on a daily basis. Torture and death are commonplace, and a young boy whose magical potential is yet untapped becomes the target and scapegoat for Sulphurium’s warring factions. Leaf, an orphan boy who somehow manages to survive Sulphurium’s deadly mage school, must quickly learn his craft if he is not to be overwhelmed by the forces determined to tear Sulphurium apart.

This novel is described by the author as “a dark fantasy series following the life of the mage Brimstone.” So far, so good. He goes on to say, “The story is fast-paced and filled with unique characters and captivating creatures. Be warned this series is not for the faint of heart. Death and suffering lie around every corner, and not even the innocent are safe.” Well, I have to take issue with the first part of this statement because I found the story to be extremely slow right up to Chapter VI, with many pages of dry, and often unnecessary, exposition. As an example, a character named Charles gets three entire pages of exposition before he dies, with no real bearing on the story. Those pages could have been (and should have been by an editor!) cut from the novel with no detriment whatsoever. It is only with the arrival of the character Heat in Chapter VI that the real story – both in terms of action and of meaningful dialogue – gets going.

The author’s statement that “death and suffering lie around every corner” is completely accurate – so much so that I was surprised there were any inhabitants left in Sulphurium by the end of the novel. Each race, faction, organization and even individual seems hell bent on destroying, torturing, or enslaving all the others. Even the mage school routinely kills its students, sometimes in large numbers, leading the reader to wonder why any parent would ever send their child there. Various murders are described, including soldiers slitting children’s throats, mainly, it seemed, for the simple reason that they could. I have no objection to dark fantasy and violence within novels, but it has to be there for a very good reason. In this novel, even the main characters kill with no compunction, remorse, or consequence.

So for me, the entire structure of the story lacked credibility. Another example of this was Brimstone’s early training at mage school by Nova. The descriptions of the lengths of time for which he was subjected to hard physical exercise, plus his hours of mage training and then servitude to Nova all within the bounds of a single day, were completely unrealistic and unachievable. I also found many examples of loose POV scenes and head hopping, while most of the exposition is told from a universal narrator perspective, making large parts of the novel disconnected and impersonal. For me, there were also too many examples of flashbacks to explain various events, which is another consequence of the loose POV and uncertain narration.

I gave this novel three stars because in places the writing and dialogue work to engage the reader. If you like unreasoning and unremitting violence then you will probably enjoy the book. I did not give it four stars because of the points I have already mentioned as well as a selection of errors scattered throughout the novel that a proofreader would easily have caught. A good example was the town of Last Hope suddenly becoming the town of Last Resort. Here are the others I noted: “Secession” instead of “succession”; “regiments” instead of “regimes”; “it was then when” instead of “it was then that”; “judged by the counsel” instead of “judged by the council”; “Junior said with a laughed” instead of “laugh”; “Brimstone eyes” instead of “Brimstone’s eyes”; “increasing disheartened” instead of “increasingly”; “attempt to force Heat” instead of “attempted”; “decide the best place” instead of “decided”.
