Android Ice Cream Sandwich Operating System
The Kyocera Rise runs the Android 4.0 operating system (dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich), which adds powerful new ways of communicating and sharing while improving on the best Android features: easy multitasking, rich notifications, customizable home screens, resizable widgets, and more.
The new Ice Cream Sandwich interface features an onscreen navigation bar that replaces the hardware buttons for Back, Home, and Menu found with older Android-powered phones. And with Google+ integration, you can video chat with groups of up to 9 friends as well as easily upload and share photos and videos. Other features include:
Face UnlockYou can now unlock your phone with just your face using the Face Unlock option. It takes advantage of the front-facing camera and state-of-the-art facial recognition technology to register a face during setup and then to recognize it again when unlocking the device. Just hold your phone in front of your face to unlock (or use a backup PIN).
And the lock screen now lets you do more without unlocking. From the slide lock screen, you can jump directly to the camera for a picture or pull down the notifications window to check for messages. When listening to music, you can even manage music tracks and see album art.
Home Screen FoldersQuickly access related apps right from the home screen by organizing apps and shortcuts into folders--just drag one app onto another to create a folder.
MultitaskingMultitasking is even easier and more visual in Android 4.0. The Recent Apps button lets you jump instantly from one task to another using the list in the System Bar. The list pops up to show thumbnail images of apps used recently--tapping a thumbnail switches to the app.
Voice InputThe new voice engine in Android 4.0 lets you dictate the text you want, for as long as you want, using the language you want. You can speak continuously for a prolonged time, even pausing for intervals if needed, and dictate punctuation to create correct sentences. As the voice input engine enters text, it underlines possible dictation errors in gray. After dictating, you can tap the underlined words to quickly replace them from a list of suggestions.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2014This is the 3rd time I've bought this same phone. It is not because the phone has not held up its because I am hard on phones and I keep going back to the Kyocera Risa phone because its so inexpensive but has the feel and look of an expensive phone. This phone is way above the rest because of the sliding keyboard. If the higher priced phones would include the slider they would be perfect like this phone. It has great functionality and all my apps and extras work smoothly without ever freezing up or stalling. It doesn't come in 4g yet but even being 3g its still is faster than other 3g phones I have had and the wifi is awesome. The speaker and camera quality are as good as a 500.00 phone and I am a podcast listener so sound is important to me. At Virgin mobile stores and kiosks these phones sell for 80.00 (on sale) to 150.00. This Amazon price is remarkable and worth every penny. Its so fairly priced that it allows you to buy it and try it without being out a lot of money, if you try it out I know you will be sold though. Most people who look at my phone assume its expensive and liked it better than the I-phones they spent their life savings on. This time when I got it, it had some updated features that only add to the already great phone. I will keep getting this same phone until someone makes a 4g with sliding keyboard, hopefully this phone will end up having 4g as its next feature update but until than I am still a very happy user of the Rise .Also it has such awesome sound quality that when using GPS it can sit on the dash board and be heard loud and clear so I do not miss any turns in my directions. Other phones I have used for GPS had to have ear piece or my blue tooth in because the speaker was not sufficient enough to be heard with out amplification or ear piece.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2012Picked this up for $50 and for that price I am more than happy with it. I knew the screen resolution and camera were the weak points according to reviews but I really don't feel that they are that bad. I don't take many pics or plan on watching netflix on the whopping 3.5 inch screen anyway so I am good with it. Besides better equals bucks and since I wasn't sure of the coverage in my area I didn't want to chance spending much more on a maybe. Glad to say though coverage is fine, much better than AT&T, so unlike a contract phone I can upgrade whenever I want. Problem is I like this phone, keyboard works great, system is snappy and quick (no games), wifi connected seamlessly, and I actually like the heft of it. It is not some paper thin peice of plastic that I have to worry about cracking when I sit on or drop it. The only quirks I have come across is that wifi keeps turning itself on which uses battery more, the power button is in a bad place for texters, the owners manual is worthless, the touch screen is a bit to sensitive for my taste (getting used to it), and the google search bar needs to be someplace else as I keep activating it when i try to get my emails. Other than that I have nothing but good things to say.
A couple of notes: Those that say the screen goes off or the phone turns off while using the keyboard watch your left hand placement. It is very easy to hit the power button because of its position on the lower left corner of the phone(when turned sidways) which just happens to be where most folks grab the phone.
Also, for those that say phone powers on and off randomly. I found a web post where someone was experiencing a similar problem on this phone. It was caused by the battery losing contact and a small shim such as a match book cover cut to fit at the base of the battery (opposite the contact end) solved their issue.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2013The Kyocera Rise is a great phone for the price. It does what most every other smartphone does, just for less money. The pros about this phone are everything you'd expect from it's sales pitch says so I'll just limit my description mainly to the cons, which there are really only two of.
I can't attest for the speed of the phone with games and such but I haven't had any real problems with load times for basic apps. There are short waiting times to load apps (between 1 and 4 seconds in my experience) but they are completely acceptable for this price of a phone.
The camera is terrible. It is unusable for bar codes or anything with detail no matter the lighting or phone stability. It is pretty fuzzy (great for if you ever see Big Foot in the distance). Though the light on it is exceptional. With an app, it can easily be used as an emergency flashlight as it is very bright.
My biggest beef with this phone (and it did concerned me before I even purchased it) is the battery life. With very minimal use (light texting and checking the time here and there) and a battery saving app, I can get it to last 3 days. With my normal use (still pretty lightweight) I have to charge it every other night. If I do anything halfway productive on it, it'll last a day. I knew this problem when I decided to convert to a smartphone (used to charging every other week), but even for smartphones, this battery is rated on the lower end.
I'm a low maintenance person and besides these two things (camera and battery life), I love the phone. I especially love the sliding keyboard. This was my first time using one and picked it up naturally. I can even now text predominately without even looking at the phone all together; something that would probably be impossible on a touch screen only phone.
