Picture the scene: I'm battling an incessant 25-30 mph headwind on my first ever sportive (82 miles around the Trossachs). I'm in my lowest gear, pedalling as hard as I can and only travelling along at 6 mph, when, suddenly a gust blows me off the tarmac and into the dirt at the side of the road. No time to get my clips off the pedals… Timber!!! And I'm taking a very close view of the tarmac.

I managed to free my feet from the pedals, pick myself up and after a couple of mins to check I hadn't broken anything got back on the bike.

After finishing I removed my helmet, to find that it had cracked on impact with the ground. Pleased that it had done it's job but surprised that such a low speed fall had destroyed it, I decided to buy a top end helmet to provide as much protection as possible.

Now, I suspect all helmets out there have to conform to British Standard kite mark regulations and the like, so any helmet would have protected my head in the fall detailed above. What you get with the Giro is a very light helmet (great for extremely long rides) which is really comfortable and provides excellent ventilation. I've got a pretty big head (62.5 cm) so this was one of the few helmets on sale that would actually fit. The padding is superb and the helmet can be 'dialled' in to fit your head perfectly using one hand - so you can adjust it pretty safely whilst riding if you need to.

Possibly out of vogue now given Lance Armstrong's fall from grace but I bought this because my bike is black and yellow… Well recommended way of protecting your grey matter.
