4.0 out of 5 stars Good all around shoe that takes some getting used to
Reviewed in the United States on 30 June 2011
This review is for Men's Merrell Barefoot True Glove (9 M in black/molten lava).

I exercise at a CrossFit gym, so I use these shoes for short distance runs, box jumps, jumping rope, landing from a pull-up bar, power lifting, Olympic weightlifting, kettlebell swings, squats, push-ups, rowing... everything really.

The first time I put them on, I didn't like the way they felt. They felt thin (duh! it's a minimalist shoe) and pinched a little at the top of the fabric around the heel. Two minutes later they felt totally comfortable. I'd forget I was wearing them. They have been comfortable ever since - no pinching or any other discomfort.

    Minimalist Design
The shoes are snug, so it takes some wiggling to get them on. There is very little arch support; the sole is thin in the arch and slightly thicker under the heel and the ball of the foot. This is intentional design. It feels the way I imagine my bare feet would feel if extremely calloused on the heel and ball. My feet feel protected. The tread on the sole gives good grip. My feet do not slip when running on concrete or when doing Olympic lifts and footing is critical for safety. The shoelace design is ingenious. The loops to hold the laces are also sewn into the tongue of the shoe. As I pull the shoelace tight the tongue automatically tucks under the sides of the shoe. I find that pulling the shoelaces lightly tight is enough; if I snug the laces down as much as I did with a typical running shoe it can make my feet ache.

I have been using these shoes three to five times a week for several months. I enjoy them for all the exercise I do with the exception of running and box jumps. The minimalist shoe doesn't provide as much impact support, so I have had some joint pain in my knee while running and my ankles while jumping down from the box. I am working on improving my Pose running technique to keep running impact in the muscles instead of the joints, and that has helped. The only problems I have had with them are because they are minimalist shoes and provide less support; I expect any problems to go away as my ankles and legs strengthen. When you buy the shoes they come with a label that says to listen to your feet, i.e., ease into using these shoes to give your ankles time to strengthen. I am satisfied with this product, expect to keep using them, and recommend them to other athletes.

    UPDATE:
Two months later I'm still using these shoes four to five times a week. Just did a 2 mile run in 14 minutes without any discomfort. Box jumps are also comfortable now. These minimalist shoes have strengthened my legs because the muscles take the impact of exercise instead of the joints.

I have gotten so used to these shoes that I wear them any chance I get. I've worn them hiking and to church (after a good washing!). They are very comfortable, and I like that I can feel what I'm stepping on. I recommend these shoes to you if you take the time to get used to them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great shoe
Reviewed in the United States on 8 April 2013
title says it all. I had recently started to get back into running [25 years of age] I hadnt ran since middle school. I had purchased a pair of new balance 520 which were amazing but it was time for an upgrade.

I had never purchased anything from merrell but I figure it was time. Wanting to increase distance as well as focus on midsole striking I ended up going with these. Comfortable feel, light weight.

For those that want to start running with minimal type shoes please do your research injury may occur. This is a product I would recommend for those wanting to upgrade running shoes or looking for minimal style footwear.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good shoes but hard to slip on
Reviewed in the United States on 6 June 2011
I started out wearing vibram five fingers several years ago but my second and third toe on my right foot are webbed to the first knuckle so I had to modify the five fingers to get them to fit. I didn't want to keep doing this so as soon as these shoes became available I bought them. I wear them to work and out hiking and they feel comparable to the five fingers but I actually like them better because they just have a wide toe box instead of the individual toes which I think helps your toes flare more naturally. My only complaint is that they are hard to just slip on (at least in size 11) because the shoe lace is a bit to short to allow you to open up the mouth of the shoe wide enough. I also bought the trail gloves for gym use and they are much easier to slip on.

Merrell should also think about switching the names of the trail glove and the true glove. The true glove makes a much better trail shoe because it is has a tougher upper.

Be warned though that while this looks like a normal shoe it is actually very minimalist with a zero drop heel and no arch support so unless you are into minimalist shoes (or looking to get into them) these aren't the shoe for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre for running
Reviewed in the United States on 11 June 2011
I am a minimalist runner and bought this shoe for a bit more protection for the soles of my feet on longer runs and/or trail runs. It looks nice enough that I wear it walking around sometimes. Had to modify (cut away) the top of the back of heel where a seam was pushing into my heel. Once that was fixed they were OK for running. I think they must have used a softer rubber for the sole because I have run exactly 163 miles in these shoes and have worn through both soles at the outside edge of the forefoot. Whatever clear substance is under the sole rubber seems to be holding up so far. The material of the upper is thicker than I am used to for a running shoe and has actually given me some minor blisters on the top of my feet. That was a first. Despite all the complaints, I continue to use these for long runs. They satisfy my need for a shoe with a bit more protection than Vibram 5-fingers, but without any foam padding or heel lift.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good running shoes
Reviewed in the United States on 16 September 2013
They came a little tighter then I like. I do wear thin socks so if you go total bare then they may fit better. I had to mod them slightly. The opening at the heal was too narrow and tight. It would dig in to my achilles tendon badly. I corrected this by slightly cutting the rear seam at the heal. This opened it enough that I no longer get blisters.

Other then that, they are wonderful. A good shoe to transition to barefoot. I'm military and not able to wear VBF's or most other 'barefoot' shoes. These are allowed.
