I was pleasantly surprised by the Hyrdobak. As the entry point for hydration systems I thought it would be barely adequate for the job but it is a fantastic and well crafted item. I took it on a trail half marathon and also on a 30 mile bike ride and it was more than enough to quench my thirst for a few hours hard effort or more if you are taking it easy on it.

It's really easy to fill and maintain (I would recommend bicarb of soda to clean it and keep the bladder in the freezer when not in use to stop any germs), the fact it doesn't have a cross strap is something that concerned me at first but actually as long as you turn it upside down and suck all the air out of the bladder first it won't slap around and stays firmly on your shoulders.

The teat is very easy to use and doesn't take long to work out how to bite and suck at the same time, it also looks very well built so wear shouldn't be a major issue for a while, but you can replace the teat easily enough.

There is only one downside and it's an odd one. Those straps do tend to unravel if you are working out particularly hard and sweat a lot so they work loose. It takes a good few hours to start but the solution is to keep the elastic bands you get with the Hydrobak and just tie up the pull through straps once you have got it where you want it. It's a minor annoyance but I did have to stop twice on my half marathon due to it. To be honest, it will only happen if you are really going for it, but the elastic bands you get with the pack will sort it.

A really well priced and great system.

Certainly the best running gear/gadget I have ever bought. It is comfortable to wear and easy to use while on the run. It holds 1,5l of fluids - I recommend using water only because it is a lot easier to clean as you can just rinse it, let it dry and rinse it again before using it again and it cannot go mouldy - which is enough for a 2h run, at least for me. If you go for a longer run (I run marathon distances in training), you would need to re-fill it somewhere or buy a larger hydration pack. It also has a small compartment for keys, smartphones or the odd energybar, but it doesn't hold any more than that really. I would love for that to be the case (e.g. to store a lightweight rain jacket) but I knew from the beginning that it didn't fit so I obviously can't (and won't!) complain about it. The only drawback is that it starts to smell quite quickly as you tend to sweat a lot at the upper back where you wear your camelbak. If you remove the bladder, you can, however, easily wash the hydro pack in the washing machine.

Overall, it's brilliant! It's not too expensive and will definitely be worth every penny. I couldn't do without it!

I've run over 300 Km with this thing on my back. The running specific models (and of course all hydration belts) have a strap around the waist that interferes with my breathing. Water bottles in my hands affect my gait and slow me down considerably. This has a minimal effect on my breathing and gait. I may be leaning in slightly more to counteract the weight on my back.

For me, 1.5 litres have been fine for all distances up to the marathon over the Brighton Fall and Winter. I love not having to stop my run to buy water at the local kwik-e-mart.

So far there has not been any chafing, but then I've always worn at least a T shirt between this and my skin. If you wear it too loose it can bounce around a bit, so I wear it snug. There is room in the zip compartment for keys, ID and maybe some change, but that's it. If the bladder isn't quite full you can get away with tucking some running gloves into the main compartment incase the weather changes over a long run.

When not in use, I take the bladder out and store it in the freezer to pause bacterial growth. If I use sports drinks with this I flush it out with tap water immediately after use. Other than that it has needed no maintenance, and I've had it for four or five months.

My only regret is that I did not buy the 2 litre model -- with the bungee chord to store a shell layer. That would have made winter running more comfortable and would probably have met my summer hydration needs too! But that's my fault, not the Hydrobak's, so no stars lost.

UPDATE (1 year on and over 1500 Km with this on my back): Just ran my first 100Km ultra. I had this on my back for 14.5 hours straight. No problems whatsoever. No chafing, or bouncing or anything. Great piece of kit. Refilling can be a bit fiddly, but aid station staff were kind enough to take care of that for me while I stuffed my face.

Purchased for long hikes and trail running. Very pleased with it’s fit and small profile and I also like the small pocket which is perfect for a phone or keys (but not much else). However I feel Camelbak have made a mistake by not including a chest strap. It’s not a problem when out hiking but on a trail or road run it does move around a little to much for my liking especially when the hydration pack is full. I have used the extra length on the shoulder straps as a makeshift chest strap but I think this should already be an integral part of the Camelbak. The product is very well made and is used a great deal but I cannot give it 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super zum Biken und Laufen
Reviewed in Germany on 25 October 2012

5.0 out of 5 stars Die perfekte Ergänzung für mittellange Radtouren
Reviewed in Germany on 5 August 2013

5.0 out of 5 stars Tolles Tool für lange Sporteinheiten
Reviewed in Germany on 10 May 2013
