On a cold December morning, a white woman is found murdered in a cheap hotel in Paharganj, New Delhi. Vicks Menon, an out-of-work journalist, is tipped off by the hotel’s receptionist and is the first to arrive at the crime scene, where he discovers a lead. It’s the bus ticket used by the dead woman two days earlier. But Vicks is battling personal trouble. He has no money, an alcohol problem, and a nearly broken relationship with Tonya, his estranged live-in partner, a clinical psychologist who specializes in profiling hardened criminals. Moving in and out of the shadows, Vicks pushes his investigation harder as it takes him from Udaipur to Bangkok. On his side, for resources, he has a nameless intelligence operative, and to read minds, a lover who is beginning to trust him again. But above all, his instinct to stay inches ahead of death will be the key to his survival. If Vicks lives, this is one story that will change his life forever. Excerpt

Nobody saw him enter the small lobby, as the only receptionist was asleep. He stole the master key from his drawer, climbed the stairs to the third floor, and entered his girlfriend’s room.

Surprisingly, she was awake. It was four in the morning. Was she expecting someone? She didn’t hear Jamie as he pussy footed closer, until he was just a step away. At that moment, his girlfriend looked up, smiled, and whispered, ‘I knew you would come,’ as if her wish had come true.

Jamie smiled too but stopped. He thought of telling her the truth. Thought of telling her that he was in her room not because he loved her but because he needed something she had. But he couldn’t.

Whatever he was expected to find was here in this room. Probably. If he asked her, she wouldn’t tell him and might even raise an alarm. That was something he couldn’t afford to risk.

He bent down and gently brushed her lips with his, and then, as she put the book away, he squeezed her neck with all his might. She struggled but couldn’t scream. He looked into her dying eyes, wondering what was she thinking, what her final feelings were. It was all over in a minute, slightly more. He removed his hands when her body slumped after a final, violent shudder.

Her struggle had left the sheets crumpled. Jamie lifted her and set her aside gently, as if he cared for her even now, and remade the bed. Then he placed her back on the bed, keeping the open novel, and even the page she was on, just as she’d left it.

Jamie was struck by an enormous desire to make love, like they had many times in the past six months, in Udaipur, Mumbai, and Goa. He smelt her hair, her face, felt the softness of her warm breasts, and whispered to his dead girlfriend, ‘I liked you. I wish you were pure too, a Muslim like me. But you are not, and that’s why you are my enemy. I hope you understand, that I had no choice.’

Jamie said this while looking into her eyes, which stared back at him. He sat in the chair and considered reading her paperback to let his thoughts wither away from the present, but couldn’t. She had said she wanted to be a writer, a crime writer, and had, therefore, been reading more and more novels to master the art of writing. But instead, she had become a victim, a crime victim, of a man who was killing more and more to master the art of survival.

Jamie inspected her neck. There were no bruises. He searched her bag, her wallet, and all the nooks and crevices of the room during the next half hour, but didn’t find anything unusual. What was she doing here, waiting all by herself? There was nothing on her: no suspicious devices, no documents, no pen drives, no CDs, no phone numbers, no scraps of paper with codes on them. Nothing. It was weird.

Jamie realized that he had been in her room for almost an hour and every second more was adding to the risk. Dawn was not far away. He slipped out of the room and peered out from behind the wall near the tiny lobby. The receptionist was still asleep and remained so as Jamie returned the key to it's drawer and vanished into the cold night. He wanted to cry, but he knew he had sacrificed his feelings to the desires of God. It was going to be all right. God had always been on his side.

His boss grunted when Jamie informed him that there was nothing on her and hung up. When Jamie called him again after five minutes, he was given revised instructions. He hired a new taxi to return to Udaipur and came back to the hotel. Within minutes, he’d checked out. He’d wandered the city streets for a few hours with his small backpack and finally, when he got tired, checked into another hotel. His boss had told him to relax for a few days.

Jamie saw the lights on the Monsoon Palace turn on in the distance, 2000 feet above where he sat. Dusk had completely dissipated, and it was dark now. It was time for better indulgences. He laughed, awkwardly at first and then freely.

Goes on the line of Detective Movie thriller.
Murder in pahargang by kulpreet yadav is fast read novel that should be read in one go .In my own case I read around till chapter 16 but I had to look into my own academic assignments so this reading got delayed a bit .When I started again I read it from start as so this crime thriller is like watching a detective stories of Byomkesh Bakshi. The story is about finding of the killer of a white women who was found murdered in cheap hotel in pahargang.Vicks menon who had recently lost his job gets a lead when he reached at the crime scene even before police arrived. He gets to know about she had came from Udaipur. He starts his own investigation.Which lands him to udaipur from there to bangkok .An investigator has to have quick wit and smart guess technique in order to prevail in his venture so does Vicks had .His adventures even came nearly close to take his life but he prevails. On what turn out to be his personal discovery later it turned into the matter of international affair. As the plot progressed others new characters comes which adds to the dimension of plot. Tonya is Vicks girlfriend who has influence him to restrain from alcohol. She is doctor by profession.Another character who is going parallel to Vicks is Ariel who is also on the same line of Vicks however there reasons were bit different.Vicks had to show his boss that he did a mistake by firing him from job and to prove his father he is not a Shishy. In his quest he met up other characters like Amar Rathore who was being murdered by Jammie the meanwhile Vicks was able to reach on death spot of Amar he saw "Bangkok " written by blood which was being getting smattered with each passing time.So in this way only he knew what was Amar last words were,Which he interpreted as the killer must have move to Bangkok. In his chase he found himself late to de board the flight between Udaipur to Delhi. When he went to Airport manager office he found himself the one man he was not expecting to face it was the man who he was chasing for.Jammie took him to beating and made him unconscious.Next time when he open his eyes he found himself surrounded amongst policeman. Here he met with one of my admired character ACP Sachin Rao.The ACP was a dutiful man who put duty his first priority. He was on duty in his last three marriage anniversary. He advised Vicks to team up with police in order to remain away as suspect to them.A well read crime reader can identify Jammie as the killer even before the books endings chapters but the reason behind the killing will lead you to read till the last line of the novel.

    Title: Murder In Paharganj
    Author: Kulpreet Yadav
    Length:278 pages

This is my first murder mystery by an Indian author. “Murder in Paharganj” by Kulpreet Yadav sent a chill down my spine.

It is about a murder investigation of women who was murdered in a Hotel in Paharganj. Vicks Menon, a man who has lost his job recently, reaches the crime scene before the police and starts his own investigation. The search for the murderer took him to Udaipur then to Bangkok and finally to Sikkim.

I liked and thoroughly enjoyed the way how Author Mr. Kulpreet Yadav included various international affairs. Such as the clash of Israel and Iran.

Although it is a crime thriller, it didn't fail to express and value emotions. The pain of a father of not meeting his daughter, the guilt of not delivering the letter at right time, the impatience while your love is at the hands of death - the author succeeded in injecting emotions into words.

It is a fast paced and suspense filled book. The language of the book is equally catchy and lucid. The book is a good murder mystery with numerous numbers of surprise and definitely a page turner but with not so eye-boggling sequences.

    What I like:
    1. The narration of the story is brilliant
    2. The presence of mind of protagonist's while solving the mystery

Over all, I enjoyed the book and it was worth reading.

Keep writing and best wishes to author.

The book opens with the murder of a forgeiner, Sherry Bing, in a cheap hotel at Paharganj, when she was waiting to receive an information from someone. Vicks, a crime reporter, fired from his job, is in need of an interesting crime story to get back his job. He reaches the crime scene and puts himself into the shoes of an investigative officer and starts investigating the murder with the only evidence of a bus ticket from Udaipur to Delhi. Meanwhile, he was unaware that he was entangled and made the scapegoat by the policemen. Further the book goes on a thriller journey to unleash the answers for who was the killer of the foreigner?? Who she actually is?? Whom she was waiting for ?? What was that information which costed her life?? Did Vicks manage to find out the murderer or he became the murderer himself??

These are just some minor questions but as the book goes on it takes you on a rollercoaster ride with elaborate questions on rivalry between countries which are ready to go to any extent to destroy each other and how people become a playtoy to the authorities who wants their religion or country to grow enormously in the eyes of the rivals.

    Review :

The success of the book is, it never stepped down from the thrill throughout the read. Though the murderer was revealed at the start, the book didn't fail to be engrossing as it rose questions at the end of every chapters.

Inspite of being a crime thriller, it didn't fail to value emotions. The pain of a father of not meeting his daughter for one last time, the guilt of not delivering the letter at right time which was worth thousands of lives, the usual disappointment on wedding anniversary, the impatience while your love is at the hands of death - the author succeeded in injecting emotions into words.
The characters travel all around the country and world like Udaipur, Paharganj, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangkok, Kolkata, Sikkim, Iran, Israel etc but the author excelled in maintaining the continuity throughout.

The characters are vast, which at times, led to confusion due to similarity of names but the characterisation is done with utmost Perfection as for some characters, the personal life was given equal priority just like the professional one which eased the connectivity of the readers to the book. The narration was indeed exceptional as the same action was narrated from both the person's perspective, leaving no room for any doubts. But the murder at the climax could have been enhanced as it wasn't justified and creates many questions like why? Who?

The cover aptly suits the book and the title and the blurb gives a deep insight to the content of the book

What do we usually expect from a Crime thriller?.... A murder has happened and on further reading the story, we get to know who the murderer is.. But in this novel "Murder In Paharganj" we already knew who the murderer is but we read it further to find the reason.

This novel opens with the murder of a foreign national, Sherry Bing in a not so famous hotel of paharganj in Delhi . After murder Vicks Menon was introduced in the story who was called by the manager of that hotel. Vicks menon is formerly a reporter who has been fired from his job because of his drinking habits and for acquiring his job back he starts investigating this murder case. Later on Jamie aka jalaluddin was presented in the story who was the actual murderer. He flew from Delhi to Udaipur after murder and then to Bangkok on the order of his boss. Vicks was continously following him from udaipur to Bangkok. He also wanted to eliminate Vicks just to ensure his own survival.

This is the first book which I've read by this author and this can be called as a perfect crime thriller. The essence of romance which was kept in this novel was very nice. During the story many secrets were revealed which were very unexpected. Every character has been potrayed so well that they were well understood. This is a fast paced book which cannot be left midway... You want to read and read more of it.

The thing which I don't like about this book was the climax. The story has a very abrupt ending. The interest which was at its peak in the mid of the plot somewhere starts fading at the end. According to me story should have been ended in a better way.

Overall this book is fabulously written and you should definitely pick this book if you want a good mystery, crime and suspense.
