Chrysler: Marchionne to announce investments, jobs to boost transmission manufacturing

Ceo of Fiat Sergio Marchionne visits during the press day the Geneva International Motor Show in Geneva, Switzerland, Tuesday, March 6, 2012.

AUBURN HILLS- Chrysler Group LLC will announce investments and jobs to boost transmission manufacturing in Indiana, according to company officials.

Chrysler on Wednesday announced chairman and CEO Sergio Marchionne will be joined by Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, other public officials and employees to make the announcement at the Auburn Hills-based automaker's Kokomo Transmission Plant, located about 50 miles north of Indianapolis.

Chrysler did not release any exact details about the announcement, but it could involve adding a new plant.

In December, Chrysler confirmed it was considering an investment of $162 million and 850 new jobs in Tipton County, Ind.

Chrysler requested property tax abatement today from Tipton County commissioners for $48.6 million worth of equipment that would be installed in the former Getrag Transmission factory.

Chrysler, in a statement, said “there are several steps that need to be completed,” before an official investment can be announced, but it is considering an investment.

"We understand the enormous interest in a potential new project, but for confidentiality reasons, we can offer no further details at this time," Chrysler said in an email to MLive.com on Dec. 17.

Other officials expected to attend the announcement include Kokomo Mayor Greg Goodnight, Tipton Mayor Don Havens, UAW Executive Assistant to the Vice President Tim Bressler and Brad Clark, Chrysler director of transmission operations.
