What an amazing few days at #SnowflakeSummit2024. A huge thank you to all our UK customers and partners that travelled to San Francisco for the week with Snowflake. Also a massive thank you to our amazing Marketing team for putting on yet another tremendous event. It was amazing to see the new announcements and how Snowflake's architecture is revolutionising AI applications; Iceberg tables are now in GA, Polaris Catalog is now available to support open storage architectures and we are adding an Internal Marketplace along with more AI governance to Snowflake Horizon. These were just a few of the many announcements. At #OffsetSymposium2024, and couldn’t agree more with Corey Jaskolski that wide-spread #cloud adoption across #DOD allows startups to scale more broadly, lowers their costs, allows them to move faster, and ultimately delivers more, saving the limited taxpayer dollars we have for #nationaldefense.

In late 2023 we reported that MySQL and MariaDB’s REPEATABLE READ did not, in fact, provide repeatable reads. The MariaDB team has been hard at work this past year. They’ve added a new flag, --innodb-snapshot-isolation=true, which causes REPEATABLE READ to prevent Lost Update, Non-repeatable Read, and violations of Monotonic Atomic View. Earlier this year, I shared the launch of Anthropic’s Claude 3 family of vision-enabled models on Amazon Bedrock. I am pleased to announce that Claude 3.5 Sonnet is now available to AWS customers; outperforming and operating at one-fifth of the cost of their previously most capable model, Claude 3 Opus. Claude 3.5 Sonnet can transcribe text from images, interpret charts and graphs, and write and edit code. This was a great keynote by Kelsey Hightower at the LF open source summit a few weeks back. Two things came to mind: If all maintainers were as open minded about the community and forks, we'd have far less energy wasted in drama and duplication. If regulators / policy makers understood the intersection better between a maintainer creating something useful -for them- and commercial entities leveraging said capabilities, we'd save a lot of effort battling bad policy. In my mind I have a very tight understanding of what I want to present, but when I put it into slides -- trying to cover context, background, motivation, reasons, etc -- the slides balloon.
