A World without Cancer: The Making of a New Cure and the Real Promise of Prevention Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 44 ratings

A World without Cancer: The Making of a New Cure and the Real Promise of Prevention is a provocative and surprising investigation into the ways that profit, personalities, and politics obstruct real progress in the war on cancer—and one doctor's passionate call to action for change

As a diagnostic radiologist who has watched patients, friends, and family suffer with and die from cancer and who was deeply affected by the enraged husband of one patient, Dr. Margaret I. Cuomo is inspired to seek out new strategies for waging a smarter war on cancer.

This year, about 1.6 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed and more than 1,500 people will die
per day. We've been asked to accept the disappointing strategy to "manage cancer as a chronic disease." We've allowed pharmaceutical companies to position cancer drugs that extend life by just weeks and may cost $100,000 for a single course of treatment as breakthroughs. Where is the bold leadership that will transform our system from treatment to prevention? Have we forgotten the mission of the National Cancer Act of 1971 to "conquer cancer"?

Through an analysis of more than 40 years of medical evidence and interviews with the top cancer researchers, drug company executives, and health policy advisers, Dr. Cuomo reveals intriguing answers to these questions. She shows us how all cancer stakeholders—the pharmaceutical industry, the government, physicians, and concerned Americans—can change the way we view and fight cancer in this country.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Radiologist Cuomo deems the war on cancer a stalemate at best. Her opening sentence is a salvo: “The system designed to study, diagnose, and treat cancer in the United States is fatally flawed.” She believes the expectations of actually curing the disease have been replaced by a clinical resignation to living with it as a chronic illness along the lines of diabetes or hypertension. She’s not happy with the triad of treatment options for cancer—surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, satirized as “cut, poison, and burn.” Cuomo finds fault with their toxicity, expense, and often minimally beneficial long-term results for individuals with advanced malignancies. She cites one study showing that cancer patients who received palliative care survived about three months longer, with less depression, than those who obtained standard therapies. She offers recommendations emphasizing prevention. Change behaviors linked to a raised risk of cancer. Lower exposure to medical radiation and environmental contaminants. Get cancer-preventing vaccines. Consider screening for selected types of the disease. In sum, Cuomo makes a convincing case for changing the culture of cancer. --Tony Miksanek

Review

A World without Cancer is an eye-opening look at the way we fight cancer. Margaret Cuomo's call for bold leadership to transform our system from treatment to prevention is urgent, powerful, and sure to start a national conversation.

A harsh view of current efforts to battle cancer, certain to alarm patients and anger many researchers and clinicians.

-- "Kirkus Reviews"

Two things that I have learned since beginning my nutrition journey are, first, a healthy lifestyle that is good for your heart is also good for all your organs and also helps prevent many forms of cancer. Second, if we do not become more aggressive with prevention strategies, then whatever healthcare system we adopt will be overwhelmed by chronic disease including cancer. That is why I strongly support Dr. Cuomo's timely and very important message. Three cheers.

Dr. Cuomo challenges us to think in new ways about making disease prevention a national priority.

A grippingly insightful game plan to eradicate cancer...We need to hear and heed Dr. Cuomo's advice.

As a cancer warrior who has run out of chemo and surgery options, Margaret Cuomo's research and insight fueled my quest to find natural methods to stay ahead of my arch enemy - bladder cancer - caused by exposure to environmental toxins as an infant and developing child. Vitamin C therapy and juicing is keeping the beast at bay. Thank you Dr. Cuomo for being a voice of truth in the fight against cancer.

Want a real solution to the growing cost of health care in the USA... stop giving ourselves cancer and eliminate 80% of the cost. Oh, and many of the same cancer solutions also eliminate huge percentages of our other most expensive, lingering diseases.

Enjoying this book written by Margaret I. Cuomo, MD expert in cancer research
It's certainly an interesting book that looks at cancer mainly from modern medicine approach, but also takes an in-depth look at alternative treatments, strongly emphasizing a need for more research, and that spending more time, effort and money on prevention maybe the key to keeping our cancer cells under control so that they die off naturally as they were meant to do so.

Many questions have been left unanswered such as, why it is cancer can very cleverly take over the driving seat from our immune system so to speak and play havoc in our members. Proposals are made; and questions asked, do we need more research to find the perfect vaccine, when millions if not billions have already been spent already on cancer research and we are no further than when President Nixon first declared “war on cancer”.

Are chemotherapy, radiation and surgery just out dated treatments that have had such devastating results? Yet chemotherapy low dose is known to work regarding certain cancers; - testicular for example. That eating fruits and berries can help it to work better.

It is a medical fact, chemotherapy, radiation and surgery is known to cause cancer to spread. Many reasons are given for this such as, these treatments chemotherapy; radiation cannot distinguish between bad cancer cells and our good cells which are our immune system. While it is argued if cancer is found early enough surgery can be effective, but on the other hand may also cause it to spread to other areas of the body. Some patients are known to use modern medicine to prevent cancer from spreading, but also use alternative treatments to deal with the many side effects.

So rather than exhaust our resources spending billions of dollars on cancer research and advertising, it is high-time for change; therefore the author calls for more spending on education. Start again at the beginning and teach healthy life styles in schools, keep up the non-smoking campaign. Avoid foods that are cancer causing, such as margarine, a known cacogenic, cut down on sugar intake as it is cancer’s favourite food. Cancer cannot live in oxygen, which is why the author stresses the need for physical exercise and vitamin D we get naturally from the sun, taking care not to stay too long in the sun as over exposure can be dangerous. If it cannot be helped then keep covered up, is the message, or use a safe sun screen that is "not" a cacogenic as many of them are said to be casing skin cancer.

Microwave ovens and mobile phones may also contribute to spread of cancer. So carry your mobile phone in your bag, and use ear pieces rather than put it to your head. Never leave these items turned on in your bedroom while asleep not enough is known about the damage they can cause. Cancer causing pesticides have been well documented as have GMO crops. But can natural organic produce be made affordable?

The author Margaret I. Cuomo, MD also calls for safer ways that we can be tested for cancer, as many of today’s methods can be cancer causing such as Mammography that has many flaws, which include false positives, false negatives, and the use of ionizing radiation, a known cacogenic, in fact mammograms do not lessen mortality rates.

Remember you do not need to be a doctor to beat cancer anymore than a doctor must first have cancer in order to understand how to cure it. Although strictly speaking there is no cure for cancer or ever can be, as we all have it in us, it can certainly be beaten when it goes out of control. Numerous people are today testifying to this truth that we read about or see on Internet. You Tube for example, helps to spread the word that “a world without cancer” can be more than just a dream, but a reality.

But the battle to stay healthy fit and well is a lifelong never ending journey a matter of finding what works best for you and sticking to it. And always stay hydrated drinking plenty of water that is known to fight off infection.
