Ninja Innovation: The Ten Killer Strategies of the World's Most Successful Businesses Hardcover – January 8, 2013

Innovate or die
For thirty years, Gary Shapiro has observed the world's most innovative businesses from his front-row seat as leader of the Consumer Electronics Association. Now he reveals the ten secrets of "ninja innovators" like Apple, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and many others.
What does it take to succeed? Discipline. Mission-oriented strategy. Adaptability. Decisiveness. And a will for victory. In short, today's most successful businesses are "ninja innovators." Drawn from Gary Shapiro's three decades of experience leading the consumer electronics industry, Ninja Innovation takes readers behind the scenes of today's top enterprises, uncovering their ten essential strategies for success.
As head of the Consumer Electronics Association and its influential annual trade show, the International CES, Shapiro has worked with the most innovative companies in history—Intel, IBM, and Samsung, to name a few—focusing on creating policies and events that produce revolutionary products year after year. He has learned the key strategies that have guided these businesses to record-breaking profits, as well as the traps that have led so many others to crushing failure.
In order to stay in front of the pace of innovation, Shapiro observes, top companies must operate as an elite strike force—just like the legendary medieval warriors known as ninjas. Ninjas weren't called upon to do the ordinary; they had to perform truly extraordinary tasks, while risking everything. As a highly trained martial-arts black belt himself, Shapiro mines the valuable insights of these centuries-old warriors to spotlight the secrets of agility, creativity, decisiveness, and reinvention that are essential for twenty-first-century leaders seeking breakthrough success.
Taking readers inside the most cutting-edge businesses, Ninja Innovation is the ultimate guide to achieving victory in today's innovate-or-die economy.

Here's a great Ninja story right out of the book:
"Twenty years ago we were in the midst of an intense battle between two different camcorder formats. The two were running neck and neck in consumer sentiment...and the battle was on.
That year at the International CES in Las Vegas, Sanyo displayed an astoundingly tiny camcorder enclosed in glass....throughout the show crowds swarmed that transparent enclosure to take pictures of the amazon device. Competitors were blown away by something that represented a huge step forward in terms of engineering.
After the show, I asked a friend at Sanyo how in the world they had gotten their camera so small. His response: They hadn't. The "camcorder" didn't even work. Sanyo just wanted to mess with their competitors.
Simply by having an unexplained, impressive-looking prototype in a glass case, Sanyo became the talk of the show an three product development teams across the world into fits of consternation. Ninjas think outside the box-perplexing competitors through a head fake is both fair and clever"
That is what this book is all about. Thinking outside the box, thinking like a true Ninja
I love books that are not only educational but fun as well and this is one of those books. Author Gary Shapiro who is the President and CEO Of CEA The consumer Electronics Association which owns and produces the most influential innovative oriented trade show in the world CES has seen it all. He has worked with numerous companies, particularly the most innovative ones in the world; and through that experience he has come to see how great companies work to gain the edge and become world leaders. From his years of experience he has learned that the way of the Ninja is the way that companies like these thrive.
Knowing that successful people hence companies have to have discipline he turned to his training in martial arts, using them as a metaphor for what it takes to succeed in business and thus came The Ten Killer Strategies of the world's Most Successful Businesses.
Here are just a few examples of the many gems that make this book both fascinating as well as inspirational:
* The only way you can defeat your opponent is to do something he does not expect. You must innovate or die.
* To be successful you must set goals; to achieve those goals one must for a strategy; and to fully execute that strategy one must never let failures get in the way.
* China has made strides (in innovation) already and every time I go to China I am overwhelmed by its investment in new buildings and infrastructure. They have new bridges, airports, convention facilities and roads. The use flat willpower, and a captive press to push through these projects from launch to completion.
However, while China's successes in manufacturing and building are notable, they are a far cry from leading the world in creation and innovation. Innovation requires the ability to challenge the status quo. But unlike Americans, the Chinese have not been taught or encouraged to do this. And they are not just catching on.
Personally I don't see how they can challenge status quo successfully and still maintain the type of government that they have today, that is just too deep a contradiction.
* Begin with the customer and work backwards. We learn whatever skill we need to service the customer. We build whatever technology we need to service the customer.
* Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.
Please read this book. We all need to be more innovative, we all need to be more creative, we all need to be more passionate about our companies and our industries. This book will help us to do that.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2013We all want to be part of a movement that improves not just your industry but, the whole world. Many of us try, but very few are even invited to be at such a table. Gary Shapiro has done this twice. First, he did this with his team's unbelievable success in defining [and prototyping] the world standard for high definition television [HDTV]. Second, he now does this every year with the CEA [Consumer Electronics Association] team's continuing reinvention of the trade show formula to keep the Consumer Electronics Show [CES] the 150,000 person strong happening [and media machine] that it is.
As consumers all and as our workday ends we get to appreciate both achievements as we watch a movie, surf the Internet or listen to some music. Thank you, CEA.
In Gary's new book, Ninja Innovation, we get a peek at what it takes to contribute to such striking successes. Of course, Gary lets us believe through the book's various vignettes that it is others who teach him the strategies for success. But, when you are a player on two world championship teams, you probably have some personal insights that the rest of us want to know.
There are many educational vignettes in this book of how the Consumer Electronics industry got to be $1 Trillion strong. But, the premium story is the background on his HDTV Strike Force. It is a wonderful piece with many lessons for all. This was a top-talent, SWAT effort to pull away from mediocrity to define a best-quality presentation standard for the masses in an environment in which there were many who were accepting of compromise. [Every time I watch HDTV, I continue to be amazed how good it looks.]
To quote Gary, "The HDTV story is one of a great strike team composed of individuals from both government and the private sector who individually and collectively had a positive, worldwide impact on a technology whose importance continues decades later. "
Get this book! Within are many lessons on how we can all become world-changing innovators.

A completely avoidable read - unless you are looking for a patriotic chest beating based on an over-wrought metaphor. There is really very little to learn about innovation or innovation management here. There is some decent insight into industry politics and how there can still be progress providing a clear vision of 'better' is maintained.

2.0 out of 5 stars Amerikanischer Hauruck Wir schaffen das Motivations-Blabla
