Editorial Reviews

Nature counts the black widow spider amongst its most fascinating and dangerous anomalies. The female arachnid often devours its mate after copulation. It's both a delicate and dangerous predator. In This Moment isn't all that different from this enigmatic beast. Led by frontwoman Maria Brink, the Los Angeles hard rock outfit strikes with a seductive metallic bite on their aptly titled fifth full-length album, Black Widow.

"Black Widow is a metaphor for this innocent young girl who gets infected with life, traumas, experiences, and the balance of light and darkness," explains Maria. "She becomes this poised and powerful creature. That's the album."

"We went into this with the title Black Widow," says lead guitarist Chris Howorth. "It fits the image of Maria as this powerful heroine. If you think of the boys in the audience watching our stage show, she's like the black widow pulling them all in."

The record, the first for the band on Atlantic Records, picks up where the group's 2012 breakthrough, Blood, left off. That album saw In This Moment debut at #15 on the Billboard Top 200, their highest chart position to date, and eventually sold over 250,000 units in the U.S. alone. It also spawned the single "Blood," which rose to #9 on the Mainstream Rock and Active Rock Songs charts. A sold out headline tour, HELLPOP, followed, as well as appearances at the Uproar Festival and Rock On The Range, and jaunts with Shinedown and Papa Roach. After the whirlwind of Blood subsided, Maria and Chris retreated to Las Vegas in February 2014 to begin working on what would become Black Widow with longtime producer Kevin Churko [Ozzy Osbourne, Five Finger Death Punch].

This is simply a great album, another great one from ITM. A mix of the new stuff, their "new" sound, with a nice dose of their older stuff.

Come on you naysayers and "Oh they did too much of this, not enough of that", or "I expected". Filling the fans expectation lists is not what a band truly cares about. Its what makes great bands suk after a while, when they keep trying to meet the so called die-hard fans expectations. It's stifling! Artists make their art for themselves, not an audience. Especially those stuck in the mud of "I know what I like and I like what I know." Phooey! There's enough of that in the metal and overall rock scene. Same things done a hundred and one similar ways.

Black Widow is clearly linked to Blood. The themes/story-lines flow across the two albums. Sure there isn't all the scream/growl'n from A Star Crossed Wasteland, but lets face it, that sound can only take a band this talented so far. It got them the attention of the male-dominated metal audiences, and I imagine the more sophisticated ladies, but then what is a band to do? Grind it out as a fairly decent metal/growl'r band? Get lost in that over-filled pool of mediocrity? If you listen to their old stuff now, you can hear Blood and Black Widow in the backgrounds, working their way to the surface.

And for those who dont get it, ITM puts on a Rock SHOW. A la, Alice Cooper, etc, and in that there must be some camp and a lot of tongue in cheek. Humor with some seriousness is a must with a Rock spectacle, and Maria knows it. If You don't get it, don't understand that, then you're truly missing out. It cant be all about banging ones head all the time. Or screaming for no clear reason, other than the lead singer cant sing. As for the rap-like stuff...come on! Wake up folks that style is here to stay, and when a singer can actually float in and out of styles like Maria...its all part of the artists palette!

I just saw the band last week for a Sirius exclusive show in NYC. Great show! They played a mix of tunes, and the only problem I had was the stage was too small for Maria. She looked like she might fall off if she got too physical...which she is prone to do. But Maria and band make all the Pop-Divas (Beyonce, J-Lo, Minaj, etc) who do a Vegas-like stage show, look small, because they have nothing but Dazzle to present. Maria reaches for a deeper place, and it feels organic, not someone elses work. All the band needs do now is better move from song to song, get the band more involved in the flow of the show, and in the "story telling." ITM should be in the Super Bowl half-time show, and not the same-old Pop divas and their hype and excess, and the distraction of not a few, but a few dozen dancers!

Maria and band are, 1. doing what they want as artists, 2. and doing something that rock seriously needs these days. infusing some fun and some serious messages at the same time.

Its the ladies of hard rock like Maria, Lzzy Hale, etc who can revive the scene. Move it past the cliches of stripper songs and my d**k is bigger then yours of the males. Hail Maria and the ladies!

I will start off by saying I enjoy all rock music. I especially appreciate a strong female power-voice. (Heart, Janis Joplin, Halestorm, Pink, Pretty Reckless,...). So, I was first exposed to In This Moment with the album 'Blood'. I enjoyed it, but thought there was too much rage for me. Then I heard some newer songs on the radio and starting looking for the album that contained them. There were three good songs (Sex Metal Barbie, Sick Like Me, and Big Bad Wolf) that heard on the radio. The song, Big Bad Wolf, pushed me over the edge. Whenever it played, i had to stop what I was doing and turn it up pats my stereo's limits. When I found all three of these songs lived on the same album, I pulled the trigger on buying it. My rule is, if only two good songs are on a release, I'll just buy those two. But if three are good, i'll give the band a shot and buy the whole release. In this case it was REALLY worth it!!!! All but the last two tracks are awesome! The raw emotion of track 11 Natural Born Sinner throws back to the power and rage of the earlier releases from this band. And I think it just topped Big Bad Wolf as my fave from them!! Great growth with this fifth release.....

    Maria is great

3 really great songs. The others just average, with her dark ballads being the better of the bunch. The three songs I feel are really strong are The Fighter, Big Bad Wolf, and Sick Like Me. Some songs are rock mixed with some type of dubstep, and tries too hard to be something different, and there seems to be too much going on at times. There is also another side in which Black Widow(the song) which sounds like Garbage from Garbage 2.0 mixed with Rob Zombie which was different, but still interesting which is probably the most different.
Maria Brink is known for her "melodic screaming" which is quite an artform IMO. This is where she shines. I'd like to see her make a song, possibly a ballad or hard hitting song with Five Finger Death Punch before her talents of melodic screaming are gone to waste.
The videos for Big Bad Wolf, Sick Like Me, as well as The Fighter are top notch, and must be seen.
I do feel her next video should be Natural Born Sinner which is 4th best song on the album (IMO) because of the pain and darkness in her voice she excels at. The pain in her voice while singing is fantastic.

Aber auch die Lieferung ging flott, so das man auch hier nicht meckern kann.

    5.0 out of 5 stars マリア嬢最新アルバム(通算5作目)
Reviewed in Japan on November 18, 2014

5.0 out of 5 stars Another strong album from the band
Reviewed in Canada on February 22, 2018
Another strong album from the band. First it did not appeal to me as impressive as the preceding "Blood" but, after playing it a few more times, I'm kind of hesitant to choose the winner between these two. And no need to tear oneself because both are great albums for those who likes this style of music (not for everyone of course). Maria's voice is as unique and daedal as ever and shines again at full brilliance here. A bit hard to pick favourite tracks, but dare to name quite few: #4 Dirty Pretty, #6 Sexual Hallucination, #7 Sick Like Me, #9 The Fighter, #10 Bones, ***#11 Natural Born Sinner*** (WOW !!), #13 Out of Hell.
