Fail. Going Back.

Fail. Going Back.
I don't like it. I don't feel that it fully protects my device like the Amazon case for my Kindle Fire HD does. The other case protects all of the edges and covers my device completely. This one does not. The device is exposed all the way around. If it were to drop, it wouldn't be protected as the other case protects the HD. It's also cumbersome to fold to use standing, and more so to even close it or open it as the flaps keep folding on each others magnet! Also, it's a shame that it doubles the weight of the HDX. The big draw of the HDX to me was the weight. Thirteen ounces! With this case, it is 24 ounces. That, combined with the fact that it doesn't even protect my $440 device, probably means it's going back. Too expensive to not protect my device fully. Too bad that it is so disappointing. I was looking forward to it. Now I have to find something else to protect my HDX.

The Origami case for Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 is necessary for optimum enjoyment of this excellent tablet.

If there is any problem at all with this case, it is that there is a bit of a learning curve necessary in order to take advantage of its best qualities. Once you figure it out, you should love it. Here are its best qualities - it is designed to optimize the sound from the unit's wonderful speakers and the magnetically secured folds in the cover provide an excellent stand for resting on a flat surface or holding by hand.

When the kindle is not in the case, the sound is muddy and too soft. This is because the speakers point to the back of the device. When placed in the Origami case, there is a space at the top between the unit and the case that redirects the sound toward the user. This improves the sound greatly. Most importantly, and this has not been stated in any other reviews (and astonishingly not by the manufacturer) the best sound is obtained by turning the device upside down so that the camera is at bottom and then resting it on a hard flat surface. This will fully direct all of the sound toward the user by using the flat surface as a part of the audio system. The resulting audio quality then becomes quite possibly the best of all tablet devices. It is quite sensational.

The folds in the cover that essentially become the stand are geometrically designed to hold the unit upright and firmly when the magnetic inserts are brought together. This works perfectly well on a flat surface. It also provides a comfortable way to hold the unit by the back with just one hand.

The case is designed to allow the unit to slide upwards within the case in order to use the rear facing camera. This is a clever way to protect the camera when it's not being used, which is most of the time, as well as to turn the camera on and off. The trade off for this is that the unit is attached to the case magnetically rather than with a form fitted plastic shell. As a result, if you lift the case by the cover and vigorously shake it, it's possible to make the tablet fall out of the case. Some reviewers have had trouble with this, but for normal usage by an adult, this should not be a problem.

Otherwise, the case is very high quality and looks great.

If you plan to use your Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 for audio and video content consumption, then forget the cost, this is the case that will let you fully enjoy the device.

After going through 2 Poetic cases and one Fintie case I finally decided to get this one since the price came down. I love this case. The red is a deep dark red which I like. Once you fold the case a few times it seems to fold automatically into the origami stand. This case by far is better quality than Poetic. With My Poetic cases both of them cracked by the magnetic closures within weeks. I super glued the case since if you don't order it directly from the company, good luck with the warranty. The Fintie case was flimsy and doesn't cover all the edges.

This case holds the kindle in place using magnets. The slide up feature for camera works fine. The volume and on/off buttons are even protected. The speakers sound so much better in this case. This does add weght to device but I don't mind. For me the kindle feels more secure. This is a keeper.

I love this case. I wasn't sure when I ordered it that it would be the case for me. I like a nice leather case on my tablet. I was upgrading from my original Kindle Fire which had a really nice leather cover. When I first received it I still wasn't sold. After using it for over a month I think it is probably one of the best cases I've used. I like the magnetic approach to securing the Kindle to the case. Some reviewers complained that the Kindle would fall out. I find that it is tightly held and I wouldn't expect it to fall out unless I through the unit at the floor or something else. It is a little cumbersome to push the unit up to use the back camera, but after a few tries I got it down. The leather feels nice, although it is on the hard side which protect the kindle. I love the origami and the fact that the cover secures magnetically to the back when you open it. This is definitely a great cover for a great tablet.

This cover is extremely well designed. It allows excellent protection for the screen, the stand works very well in both portrait and landscape, and integrates the back power and volume buttons very well. In fact, the button integration is so well executed, it fully justifies the location of the buttons on the back.

The slide feature to activate the camera also works as intended, with a clear detente to properly "seat" the HDX in the correct position and to activate the camera, which is automatic. What I find completely amazing about this case is the enhancement of the speakers when the HDX is in the case while watching videos. When out of the case, the sound can be a little tinny and does leave the sensation that the sound is really coming from the back of the HDX. But when in the case, the bass comes through, the surround is significantly enhanced and the overall "visual" feel of the sound emanating from the front of the HDX is highly enhanced.

I have though had one or two occasions where I experienced a random restart of the HDX with the cover flipped open, which I understand is the result of the magnet strength. This is however far outweighed by the functionality of the cover being extremely reliable in putting the HDX to sleep.

Reviews that indicate the sides of the HDX are exposed are simply not correct, at least for the 8.9 version. The back of the cover wraps around the edges of the HDX and offer complete protection of edges and corners.

Although pricy, I consider this cover to be an essential and well integrated part of the HDX user experience, and highly recommend this cover.
