August 15 is celebrated as the Independence Day in India. On August 15, 1947, India got independence from the British Empire. The day is annually observed on August 15 as a national holiday in the country.
The country attained independence from foreign rule following years of struggle and independence movement led by various freedom fighters. The independence movement noted for largely nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience was led by the Mahatma Gandhi.
The independence of India also led to the partition of the country into two parts. The British Indian Empire was divided along religious lines into the Dominions of India and Pakistan. The partition was accompanied by violent riots and mass casualties, and the displacement of more than 15 million people.
On 15 August 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru, who became the first Prime Minister of India, raised the Indian national flag above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi. On each subsequent Independence Day, the prime minister of the country has raised the flag and given a speech from the same podium.
