From Old Swedish kø̄pa, from Old Norse keypa, kaupa, from Proto-Germanic *kaupijaną, *kaupōną (to buy, trade), from *kaupô (innkeeper, merchant), Latin caupo (innkeeper, shopkeeper, tradesman), caupōnor (to trade, haggle). Cognate with Danish købe, Norwegian kjøpe, German kaufen, Dutch kopen and English cheap.
