From Proto-Germanic *hwat (what), neuter nominative of *hwaz (who, what). Cognate with Old English hwæt, Old Frisian hwet, Old Saxon hwat, Old Dutch wat, Old High German waz, Gothic 𐍈𐌰 (ƕa).
