A Mi-8 helicopter, the model most widely in service throughout the world, crash-landed in the sparsely populated Siberian republic of Yakutia on July 2. Initial reports said 19 of the 28 people aboard had been killed, but a regional official put the number of deaths at 23, saying only the three crew members and two passengers had survived; one of the two passengers was tentatively reported dead on July 3. Some sources said 11 of the 25 passengers were children, including infants. More than 24 hours after the crash, the helicopter and its passengers had not been found by rescuers from Russia’s Emergencies Ministry. The Mi-8’s technical characteristics are described in the infographic.
